follow the following steps to searchwich happiness.
1:
try typing the search string into your location box in your
browser.
example: to find "linguine hut", type linguine hut into the
location box and your browser will probably get to the right spot.
warning: you might get sent to a page that you do not want
to be at. this doesn't happen often with corporate pages, capitalism
being what it is, but all the same, be careful.
warning: this only works with the real recent browsers.
for the others, try typing your search as one word, surrounded by "www."
and ".com", ".org", or ".net"
for instance, when searching for "linguine hut", try "www.linguinehut.com",
"www.linguinehut.org", and "www.linguinehut.net." (in that order).
2:
try searching directories where the pages are organized by
category. these directories, like miningco.com and yahoo!, are usually
run by people, not machines, and tend to have the file that you are looking
for all in one place. you have less chance of getting back a whole
bunch of static. however, you might not find a page if it hasn't
been submitted or found by the people in charge.
finally, search the search engines that crawl across the web
harvesting pages. these engines may not have stuff that's shown up
in the past couple weeks, but they may have sites that haven't been catalogued
by a directory. you'll also get a bunch of static (files that have
nothing to do with anything).
if you are looking for pictures or sounds specifically, try
engines that let you choose certain file formats to search for. two
such engines are lycos and hotbot.
